The face of student debt is multi-racial and multi-generational.

In the Massachusetts 7th, we’ve heard stories about the deep hurt caused
by insurmountable student debt — including from a 76 year old still paying
off their student loans.

We do a great disservice when we perpetuate the idea that the faces of
student debt are graduates who went to Ivy League universities. Student
loan debt cuts across socioeconomic, racial, and generational lines —
Black borrowers are disproportionately burdened, and the fastest growing
population of those who owe student debt is 50+.

That’s why Ayanna, along with Senator Elizabeth Warren and their
colleagues, has kept up the pressure on President Biden to cancel at least
$50,000 of federal student loan debt per borrower.

Student debt is a racial and economic justice issue, it is a gender and
generational issue. And Ayanna will not stop fighting to cancel it.

At the beginning of the pandemic, before Ayanna stepped in, tens of
thousands of people had wages and benefits garnished after defaulting on
their student loans.

In Massachusetts’ 7th district, we’ve heard stories from educators who
have lost their teaching licenses after defaulting on their student loans
— loans they took out because they wanted to be of service to their
communities.

Student loan debt is a $2 trillion dollar problem, but we can help solve
it by cancelling student debt and giving people their lives back — it’s
time.
