John -- Congressman Jamaal Bowman defeated one of the most powerful members in the House Democratic Caucus, Eliot Engel, in a successful challenge for New York’s 16th. His victory was another blow to the status quo in Washington D.C.
Now that Jamaal is in Congress, he’s working for kids and families in his home district and for people all across the country.
Let’s take a look!
As a former middle school teacher, Jamaal is centering education justice and his love of ALL students in his policy making decisions.
Recently, Jamaal unveiled a $1.16 trillion proposal to fund climate-friendly retrofits at every K-12 public school in the nation, hire and train more educators, and massively increase funding for low-income and disability-focused programs. His proposal would direct $250 billion over 10 years to retrofit schools, reverse the use of toxins like lead and asbestos, equip facilities with solar panels, and increase energy efficiency.
Jamaal’s plan would cut emissions of carbon dioxide by nearly 29 million tons per year -- the equivalent of taking 6 million cars off the highway!
Revolutionary policy is a direct result of electing people with unique backgrounds and experiences. We need more leaders who understand where issues intersect, and will offer bold, progressive solutions for solving them.
It’s not just students and young people, Jamaal is fighting for equity and justice outside of the classroom.
The Broadband Justice Act would require the Department of Housing and Urban Development to classify broadband as a utility that could be subsidized through the federal government.
From the families of rural America whose communities lack the infrastructure needed to connect to the internet, to suburban and urban families struggling to afford the basics -- Jamaal understands that access to broadband is access to opportunity and should be affordable for everyone.
His legislative efforts are impressive, but Jamaal’s integrity is what really sets him apart.
Amidst scandal and sexual assault allegations, Jamaal joined AOC in calling for the resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Putting survivors first, Jamaal asked a powerful sitting member of his own party, and from his home state, to do the right thing and leave his seat immediately.
When we elect political outsiders, they protect people closest to the pain, not people closest to the power.
Now more than ever, America needs leaders like Jamaal in Congress, people who legislate with an acute awareness of what working families face.
