When the Senate can pass multi-trillion dollar tax cuts for the superrich but a minimum wage increase gets filibustered, it’s clear: something has to change.

The filibuster is a tool that the powerful use to maintain inequality.
Think about it: An increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour was killed because it wasn’t fully filibuster-proof. A bill to protect voting rights is at risk of failing because of the filibuster. Meanwhile, just a few years ago, a multi-trillion dollar tax cut for the rich passed because it wasn’t subject to the filibuster.
Does this seem confusing?! Don’t worry, you’re not missing anything and you’re not the only one confused. It’s just that the filibuster – plus many other arcane Senate rules – are designed to benefit the rich and powerful.
To enact progressive policy, we need to fix our legislative system. Eliminating the filibuster would be a giant first step to a system that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few at the top. As long as the filibuster exists, 41 senators – most of whom are white, male, and wealthy – will have veto power over even the most popular progressive reforms.
So today, we’re asking 3,000 members of this team to sign on to our petition calling for the filibuster to be ELIMINATED. We need your signature before 11:59 p.m. TONIGHT, so please don’t wait: Tell the Senate to abolish the filibuster now!
