Four years ago, New York Governor Andrew
Cuomo told a reporter that he opposed legalizing recreational
marijuana because it’s “a gateway drug.”

Last week, New York officially legalized recreational marijuana
and expunged prior convictions, proving that one no matter how
powerful a politician is, one person cannot stop the will of the
American people if we refuse to take no for an answer.

Now, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to soon
introduce legislation in the U.S. Senate to federally
decriminalize marijuana, a critical step before federal
legalization.

But President Biden opposes legalization — according to Bernie
Sanders’ former campaign manager, Joe Biden is personally
responsible for excluding the legalization of recreational
marijuana from the 2021 Democratic Party platform.

John, it's time for President Biden to stop standing against the
extremely popular idea of legalizing marijuana in the United
States. If you agree, will you sign our petition calling on

Years of sustained pressure from grassroots organizers and
activists has brought us to this moment — New York is the 15th
state to legalize recreational marijuana, with medical use legal
in 36 states.

That follows Our Revolution's support of successful ballot
measures to legalize marijuana in New Jersey, Arizona and Montana
last year.

Marijuana prohibition in the United States was born from and is
fueled by systemic racism, and it has ruined countless lives —
disproportionately, Black and Brown lives. In addition to ending
marijuana prohibition throughout the country, we must expunge all
marijuana convictions and work to repair the incalculable damage
done by the war on drugs.

As Bernie Sanders said recently, it’s absurd and idiotic:

Bernie Sanders: Good. Marijuana should be legal nationwide. All
marijuana convictions must be expunged. It is absurd and idiotic
that the federal government considers marijuana to be as
dangerous as heroin.
