President Joe Biden called the Georgia GOP's new voter restriction laws exactly what they are: “sick,” “despicable,” and “un-American.”
Republicans have introduced over 250 bills across the country to make it harder for Americans to vote, but after our 2020 victories, they're focusing the worst of their efforts on Georgia. The 95-page bill Brian Kemp just signed into law will shorten runoff elections by half the time and cut the early voting period. It will eliminate vote-by-mail drop boxes across the state. And it will make it a crime to give water to voters who have to stand in line for hours.
MSNBC Opinion Columnist Jessica Levinson puts it best, “Since Democrats have been successful under Georgia's current set of election laws, Republicans appear to believe that the way to ensure they can once again win political campaigns is to change the laws to be more restrictive.”
And they'll succeed if we don't fight back, we know it. Georgia and Raphael Warnock's seat will determine the Senate majority next year -- and Georgia will likely determine the White House in 2024.
It's not enough to condemn the GOP's actions -- we need to stop them. Republicans are only targeting Georgia because grassroots power, strategic organizing, and progressive leadership from activists like Stacey Abrams helped us flip the state twice. They know the power we have -- and we're ready to do it all again.
But too many Democrats are getting discouraged by the GOP's voter suppression tactics. They think the Senate and the House are already lost. They've stopped giving, and as a consequence, we're more than $6,039 behind our grassroots goal.
You helped us win in 2020, and we know we can do it again in 2022 to protect our legislature -- because our democracy depends on it. But we'll need to start early and tap into the same energy we had last year.
