Dwight Evans: As elected officials we must always stand up for those who can't do so on their own. This is the America that I believe in.

John,

243 years ago today here in Philadelphia, our founding fathers wrote that we are all "created equal," and that there are "certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

That fight for equality -- for those unalienable rights -- is one that continues today.

Like you, I love our country. Participating in our democracy is what makes America one of a kind, and we must never take that for granted.

As you enjoy the cook-outs, block parties, and fireworks today, I encourage you to celebrate how far we've come, but also recommit yourself to our future. It's more important than ever that we work together to secure the great American promise for ALL people, no matter who you are or where you come from -- we all deserve to live freely.

Happy 4th of July, everyone.

Thanks,

Dwight
