John,
Last week, survivors launched our #EDActNow campaign to rescind Betsy DeVos’ harmful Title IX rule. Today, (just seven days into our campaign!) the Department of Education announced their process for reviewing, and possibly rewriting, DeVos’ Title IX rule!
Here’s their three next steps on the rule:
-
Host listening sessions with students, survivors, and other stakeholders
-
Issue a Q&A on the Title IX rule to “provide clarity” on how ED interprets the rule, including portions where schools have discretion
-
An anticipated Notice of Proposed Rule Making “to amend” the Title IX rule
Survivors called on the Department of Education to take immediate action on Title IX––and it appears they listened. But they didn’t do one very important thing - Betsy DeVos’ Title IX rule is still in place. We MUST ensure Education Secretary Cardona knows how urgent it is that this Trump-era rule that prioritizes and protects abusers be repealed as soon as possible.
So, what do we do next? Here’s what’s going to happen:
-
The Department of Education announced today that they will likely amend the Title IX rule, but only after hosting listening sessions with students, survivors, and other stakeholders. This is an important opportunity to ensure the new Title IX rule reflects the needs of student survivors.
-
It is absolutely essential that Secretary Cardona and the Biden team hear from us at these listening sessions. We need to make sure the Department of Education understands how urgently survivors need the DeVos rule rescinded.
Survivors, sign up here and we will notify you when the listening sessions become available and provide further resources and organizing opportunities .
This is an exciting first step, but this announcement doesn't mean that we are taking our foot off the pedal. Survivors, this is the time to plug in and start demanding they take our rights seriously. Join us.
In Solidarity,
Sage Carson
