People in detention request investigation of medical neglect and abuse

We at the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) filed a civil rights complaint on behalf of several people who U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) refuses to release from immigration jail. They are suffering egregious medical neglect and terrible conditions like rotten food, crowding during a pandemic, cold temperatures, and no hot water. We urge the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties to investigate their complaint and call on ICE to free these individuals immediately. Read about the civil rights complaint.

160+ organizations demand review and release of people in detention

NIJC joined 160 immigrant rights and legal services organizations in urging Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas to review the cases of the more than 14,000 people still trapped in deadly detention during the pandemic. Many should not be detained or deported according to the administration's own guidelines. The Biden administration must start releasing people immediately. Read more.

City of Chicago honors NIJC's Mary Meg McCarthy

We are honored that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recognized NIJC's fearless leader Mary Meg McCarthy alongside an inspiring group of women leaders. The mayor held a virtual event to commemorate Women’s History Month by honoring 24 community leaders for their commitment to supporting and advocating for the City of Chicago. National forum holds Biden administration and ICE accountable

NIJC partnered with other human and immigrant rights organizations to hold a national Eyes On ICE forum to talk about deportations, detentions, and holding the Biden administration and federal agencies accountable. Robert Panton, an NIJC client who is currently fighting for his freedom from detention, Nayna Gupta from NIJC's policy team, and NIJC attorney Lee VanderLinden shared their experiences during the event. Watch this event on Facebook.
