ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE
TAKE ACTION!
URGENT ACTION ALERT: OPPOSE SENATE BILL 90 - CALL/EMAIL TODAY!
The Senate Rules Committee will hear SB 90, a voter restriction bill, TODAY, Tuesday, April 6 at 9:30AM ET. This is the bill's final committee stop before going to the Senate floor for a vote. Despite a smoothly run election in Florida in 2020 which has been hailed as a national model, in which there was record vote-by-mail voting with the fewest number of issues, the Republican legislature is forging ahead with this voter suppression bill that would severely limit vote-by-mail.
NOTE: This bill is part of a coordinated national effort to enact laws that would make it harder to vote. In 43 states, over 250 voter suppression bills have been filed that will disproportionately impact voters of color, elderly voters, and students.
Please make your voice heard to stop this blatant voter suppression bill.
As written Senate Bill 90 will:
-
Make it harder to vote-by-mail by forcing voters to submit VBM requests more often than is currently required, a completely unnecessary administrative hurdle (the bill limits requests to all elections through the end of the calendar year of the next regularly scheduled general election.)
-
Cancel all current vote-by-mail ballot requests, meaning a voter who submitted a request last year thinking it was valid through next year’s election will need to submit a new request. There is no provision to grandfather in current VBM requests - all requests must be new after the law takes place July 1, 2021.
-
Make it a crime for voters to ask anyone other than an immediate family member, such as a trusted friend or caregiver, to pick up or drop off a vote-by-mail ballot, thus limiting or making impossible voting access for working, elderly, and mobility-impaired Floridians who cannot retrieve or turn in their ballot themselves.
-
Bans secure vote-by-mail drop boxes, which more than 1.5 million Floridians used during the 2020 Election to safely, conveniently, and securely return their ballot.
TAKE ACTION TODAY: Please contact the members of the Senate Rules Committee and urge them to vote "NO" on this bill. (All Democrats are on board, but it's helpful for them to have a record of calls/emails.)
