Why did the other cops stand idly by while Derek Chauvin took George Floyd’s life? Because his actions were not unusual to them. 

Chauvin -- like many other Minneapolis police officers -- has a long and well documented history of abuse of force. How many times before had those officers witnessed the abuse of a Black man in police custody? How many of them had perpetuated similar abuse? How many of them saw this as a normal day’s police work?

These cops act like they’re above the law because the law shields them from accountability with policies like qualified immunity. 

The New York City Council recently voted to end qualified immunity for cops. This is one step in the fight to dismantle the current criminal justice system, but it’s an important one.

This system is not broken. From corrupt cops to unaccountable prosecutors, the whole criminal justice system is working exactly as intended -- and that’s why we need activists like Cori Bush in office to transform it from the top.

This underscores why it was so incredibly consequential for Cori Bush to win as the first Black Lives Matter activist ever elected to Congress. Cori was called to action in Ferguson in the aftermath of the murder of Michael Brown. A survivor of police brutality herself, she now sits on the House Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

We know we need reformers and activists like Cori in Congress. People who won’t back down in the face of establishment pressure. Help us recruit more Black Lives Matter organizers to run in 2022 with a monthly contribution.

John, Congress has the power to end qualified immunity nationwide. They have the power to end police militarization and redirect federal funds to non-violent resources. Congress could do so much to address these issues if we elect people willing to fight for change.

But until we do, the Derek Chauvins of the world will continue to abuse their power while hiding behind the badge, and their fellow cops will continue to look the other way.
