With more than 430 proposed coal mines worldwide preparing to start activities, methane leaks from these mines could have a more significant climate impact than carbon emissions from U.S. coal plants.
John,
A new report from the nonprofit Global Energy Monitor has a stark warning for everyone who cares about climate change.
With more than 430 proposed coal mines worldwide preparing to start activities, methane leaks from these mines could have a more significant climate impact than carbon emissions from U.S. coal plants.
Here’s what the report says we’re facing:
“If new coal mines proceed as planned, without mitigation measures in place, then a major source of greenhouse gas will go unrestrained.
“Planned mines, some of which are in the late development stage, could leak methane at a rate equal to 1.14 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, more than the 952 million tonnes of carbon dioxide U.S. coal plants released in 2019.”
John, SEEC members of Congress are already stepping up to take action on mitigation measures. But we need more SEEC members in Congress if we’re going to fight to prioritize clean energy and avoid climate change catastrophe. Will you contribute now to help?
First and foremost, we need to work harder to stop new investments in coal mines and coal-powered power plants around the world. And where coal mines do exist, it’s critical that government agencies enforce mitigation measures to capture methane and avoid leaks while we work to transition away from fossil fuels.
Policies to support this transition are exactly what SEEC members in Congress are focusing on.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
