Disabilities Reported by Prisoners  

This report presents data on the prevalence of disabilities reported by state and federal prisoners, detailing six disability types: hearing, vision, cognitive, ambulatory, self-care, and independent living. Important differences in each type of disability are highlighted by demographic characteristics. The report also presents prevalence estimates of learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders (ADD and ADHD), and prisoners’ participation in special education classes.

Parents in Prison and Their Minor Children

This report presents the number of state and federal prisoners who were parents of minor children and the number of minor children reported among prisoners. This report provides prevalence estimates of parents by race and ethnicity. Additionally, the age distribution of minor children of imprisoned parents is presented.

Veterans in Prison

This report presents counts and percentages of veterans in state and federal prisons. It describes incarcerated veterans by demographic characteristics and military characteristics, including combat experience, branch of service, and discharge type. It also describes current offense, sentencing, and criminal history by the prisoners’ veteran status.

Human-Trafficking Offenses Handled by State Attorneys General Offices, 2018

This report details the information reported by state attorneys general offices in 43 states, the District of Columbia, and three territories on their human trafficking laws in 2018. The report describes the jurisdiction of state attorneys general offices over labor- and sex-trafficking offenses, their prosecution of human-trafficking offenses, and their staffing or resources to handle human-trafficking cases.

It also describes offices that provide victim services, train other entities to recognize and combat human trafficking, and participate in human-trafficking task forces.

Human Trafficking Data-Collection Activities, 2020

This report describes BJS’s activities during 2019 and 2020 to collect data and report on human trafficking as required by the Combat Human Trafficking Act of 2015 (34 U.S.C. § 20709(e)(2)(B)). The report details ongoing and completed efforts to measure and analyze the nationwide incidence of human trafficking, characteristics of human-trafficking victims and offenders, and criminal justice responses to human-trafficking offenses by state and local law enforcement, prosecutors, and courts.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Local Jail Population, January-June 2020

COVID-19 spurs 25% drop in inmates held in local jails

WASHINGTON — Local jails in the United States experienced a large decline (down 185,400 inmates) in their inmate populations from June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2020, which can be attributed mainly to the COVID-19 pandemic. At midyear 2020, jails held 549,100 inmates, down from 734,500 at midyear 2019. The jail incarceration rate of 167 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents on June 30, 2020 was the lowest since 1990 when it was 163 per 100,000.

This report provides statistics based on BJS’s Annual Survey of Jails and Census of Jails. It describes the number of inmates held in local jails, jail incarceration rates, demographic characteristics of jail inmates, the number of admissions to jail, jail capacity, inmate turnover rates, and staff employed in local jails. It is the 33rd report in a series that began in 1982.
