John,

More than a year ago, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, and we have all been trying our best since then to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Throughout the pandemic, what has stood out to us is the deep compassion of people like you. Even as you face your own fears and anxieties about the virus, as a member of our IRC community, you have shown that you care about how the pandemic is impacting families in crisis-affected countries.

In the last year, IRC staff and essential workers on the frontlines were able to adapt and deliver health care services, give clean water, soap and masks, continue educating children, offer economic empowerment services, and provide other vital aid to refugees in need.

During the pandemic, we've been able to more than double our number of health operations and continue our life-changing programs worldwide. Here are just a few examples of the ways in which you've helped our teams and the people we serve rise to meet the challenges of COVID-19:

"I learnt from Elmo that you have to wash your hands for twenty seconds and I always sing the alphabet song when washing them which helps me know it's been twenty seconds." — Talia, 6 years old, Jordan

Talia has benefited from Ahlan Simsim educational programming, a partnership between the IRC and Sesame Workshop that directly serves children affected by the Syrian war in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

"With coronavirus my responsibilities as a father have changed... Children are gifts for us and we need to take extreme care of this gift. We all want the best for our kids and for kids all around the world." — Thabit Hassan Qaied, 35-year-old Yemeni father

The IRC helped Thabit Hassan Qaied's family access clean water, soap, masks, and key information about COVID-19 safety measures.

"We're educating. We're screening for COVID-19. We have a specific unit that treats patients with respiratory issues." — Dr. Edna Patricia Gomez, Venezuelan refugee and doctor with the IRC

Dr. Edna Patricia Gomez has provided women's health and triage support to stranded Venezuelan families in Cúcuta, Colombia. In response to COVID-19, IRC teams set up triage units in key transit points and increased our delivery of telemedicine services.
