Mitch McConnell is now lying through his teeth to protect the filibuster.

The GOP Senate Minority Leader says, "[The filibuster] has no racial history at all. None. There's no dispute among historians about that." But McConnell himself previously called out the filibuster's racist history when it was convenient for him to do so, so we know his support of this Jim Crow relic is only to help him cling to power.

We're not keen on allowing the most powerful white man in the Republican Party to erase racial history whenever it's convenient. As The Washington Post points out, the filibuster was explicitly created and used to prevent Black people from voting. It has also stood against anti-lynching legislation and denied Black people the right to live with the full benefits of citizenship.

And history is repeating itself. Senate Republicans are now using the filibuster to block voting rights legislation as they unleash a tsunami of voter restrictions in battleground states like Georgia, where Black and Brown voters recently led Democrats to victory.

This is the last chance Democrats will have to eliminate the filibuster and protect our democracy. We need to show Congress that the American people value progress more than a racist tradition.
