For more than a year now essential workers have been on the frontline of the pandemic working to keep our city running despite the constant risk of COVID-19 infection and death. Labor and community activists are calling on DC Mayor Bowser to enact the DC Essential Workers Bill Of Rights, which would guarantee that ALL essential workers would be provided with adequate sick leave, hazard pay and other key protections and rights.

DC honors MWC's Forester as a "Washington Woman of Excellence"
Confirming what the local labor movement has long known, Metro Washington Council president Dyana Forester was honored as a `Washington Woman of Excellence' on Tuesday. "I'm humbled and happy to accept this award on behalf of all the amazingly excellent women workers of Washington," Forester said. The Mayor's Office on Women's Policy and Initiatives (MOWPI), in Partnership with the District of Columbia Commission for Women, bestows these awards each year to honor District women "who have shown dedication, impact, and excellence in the areas of health and wellness, civic engagement, and women's empowerment." Forester was chosen because of her work "to represent DC's labor unions who represent most of the District's women front line workers, and your powerful advocacy within the DC's labor force in your initiatives to support healthy working conditions and equitable work opportunities," said Mayor Bowser.
Today's Labor Quote: Mine Workers president Cecil Roberts, describing Massey Energy, which managed the Upper Big Branch Mine (see Labor History, below). He called Massey
"A rogue corporation...that established a physical working environment that can only be described as a bomb waiting to go off."
