CW: This email mentions police brutality and murder.

John,

This week, we learned that George Floyd told Derek Chauvin, the police officer in Minneapolis who kneeled on his neck, that he couldn’t breathe 27 times.

27 times.

Chauvin’s trial is a chilling reminder of why we MUST demand accountability and work to dismantle the systems that perpetuate police brutality and fail to protect Black lives.

But it’s hard watching the Derek Chauvin trial knowing that police kill more than 1,000 people every year and only 1% are convicted for these killings.

There are so many people whose names we don’t know who have not gotten justice. Which makes it so important that George Floyd does.

We lost Michael Brown, Jr. We lost Breonna Taylor. And there are countless more Black lives lost to police violence that don’t make national headlines. Political movements like the fight for Black lives are demanding real change. Defunding the police is a call for divesting from the criminalization of our communities and investing instead in the social services that actually keep our communities safe.

This is what Cori has been fighting for since Ferguson in 2014. It’s why Cori ran for Congress — to stand with community, to fight the tough but necessary fights, to protect our very lives. Cori has made it clear since the moment she took office that she’s not afraid to take on these big fights and center racial justice in her legislative priorities.

And it’s clear that Republicans are terrified of the movement she’s inspiring: It’s why Fox News won’t stop mocking Cori’s work and why Tucker Carlson ranted on live TV that Cori is trying to “divide the country along racial lines” after she called for justice in the wake of hate crimes in Atlanta.

We’re not slowing down one bit. If you’re with Cori in this fight, will you make a donation to power her work to dismantle the forces of white supremacy, to legislate in defense of Black lives, and to prioritize investments in communities that have faced the injustices of being historically under-resourced and underserved?
