With COVID-19 social distancing and lockdowns across the country for most of 2020, many hoped that at least one silver lining would be decreased pollution levels.

Unfortunately, according to a just-released IQAir report on air pollution across the world in 2020 — that hasn’t been the case.

In fact, the devastating U.S. wildfires caused so much deadly air pollution last year, they surpassed the pollution drop caused by pandemic-responsive travel restrictions.

The 2020 World Air Quality Report determined an overall seven percent increase in fine particulate (PM2.5) pollution nationwide despite a 13 percent drop between April and July from reduced fossil fuel combustion.

Shockingly, the average air pollution exposure levels across the U.S. were higher in 2020 than in 2018 and 2019.

The IQAir report is candid in assessing where things stand in the U.S. as we begin to resume normal activities after 12-months of pandemic-related reduced activity.

Thirty-eight percent of U.S. cities failed to meet World Health Organization (WHO) targets for annual PM2.5 exposure in 2020 , contrasting with 21 percent in 2019 and 20 percent in 2018.

A record-breaking wildfire season resulted in higher than typical summer and autumn air pollution levels in many American cities. In September 2020, 77 U.S. cities were in the top 100 most polluted cities for PM2.5 by monthly average.

This all feeds into a deadly cycle where increased carbon pollution from the burning of trees exacerbates the climate crisis — triggering more and more deadly wildfires that add further carbon and particulate pollution
