Amid this optimism, Dr. Fauci is reminding Americans: We can’t let our guard down, we still need to wear face masks in public. Republican Governors across the country are repealing public health orders including mask mandates and social distancing guidelines. This has public health experts worried that at a time when vaccinations are accelerating and we’re slowing the spread of the virus, we’re opening ourselves up to risk. Dr. Fauci knows: We’re restless and eager to get a sense of normalcy back. But if we’re not careful, we risk another wave and one that could be dominated by a more dangerous and more infectious strain.
