Transgender people, specifically trans kids, are under attack in state legislatures across the country. In fact, Arkansas just became the first state to ban necessary health care from trans youth.
HB 1570 prohibits doctors from providing gender-affirming medical care to trans kids. The bill is currently sitting on Governor Hutchinson’s desk awaiting signature.
28 states are voting on anti-trans legislation this year. This is an abhorrent attack on the trans community, and a clear sign that federal legislation is needed to protect the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole.
The Senate is currently sitting on a piece of legislation that would do just that — the Equality Act. It successfully passed through the House in February, and now it's up to us to ensure our Senators do the right thing and pass the Equality Act now.
This monumental bill would update federal civil rights protections for LGBTQIA+ folks, AND update protections for all women and people of color in areas like transportation, retail spaces, and more.
And it would stop bills like HB 1570 dead in their tracks. Studies have shown that children who are unable to access gender-affirming medical care experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide than trans youth with access to affirming care.
If passed, HB 1570 and other bills like it will continue to attempt to criminalize trans experiences and threaten the lives of LGBTQIA+ folks in our nation. It’s time to update our civil rights protections.
