Dear allies,

From the FMCB promising to reverse the MBTA cuts ([link removed]) to the vote count beginning in the Alabama Amazon workers' union drive ([link removed]) , the past two weeks have seen important moments of change for our cities, our state, and for our nation. Join us in taking a moment to celebrate this progress, while recognizing that the road to recovery is long and there is much work for us to do.

We congratulate former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on his confirmation earlier this month by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of Labor ([link removed]) in the Biden-Harris administration. Secretary Walsh, who has a decades-long history in the labor movement and was head of the Greater Boston Building Trades Union, is a fierce ally of working-class families and has pledged to protect worker’s rights and improve our access to well-paying jobs.

With his confirmation, we also congratulate Mayor Kim Janey for writing a new chapter in Boston’s history as its first female and Black mayor ([link removed]) . We are excited to see new days in Boston under her leadership. We look forward to working together to recover from this pandemic, restore our communities from the aftermath, and build on our successes.

Indeed, it's an exciting time for workers. Nearly 6,000 Amazon employees in Bessemer, Alabama, voted this week on whether to form a union ([link removed]) — a first at the retail giant. The results of the election likely won’t be available for several days, but if successful, it could trigger a wave of increased union activity ([link removed]) and growing strength.

FMCB votes to reverse the MBTA cuts
After escalating opposition from the Public Transit Public Good Coalition and our allies, the MBTA will restore ([link removed]) the COVID-19 service cuts that were put in place across all modes ([link removed]) during the coronavirus pandemic. This is a major victory for frontline workers and working-class communities who rely on public transit to get to their jobs, medical appointments, and perform other critical tasks. In a recent op-ed for the Commonwealth Magazine ([link removed]) , Eunicia Gomes and Marie Menard have highlighted the work of essential workers and their struggle to find reliable child care during the pandemic. Matahari: Vaccine Access for all Domestic Workers
Significantly, a majority of domestic workers are women of color, and we have seen in Massachusetts how immigrant communities of color have been the state's hardest-hit during COVID-19. Join the Matahari Workers’ Center by taking action and signing their letter ([link removed]) to urge Governor Baker to call for the inclusion of ALL domestic workers in Phase 2 of the state’s vaccination rollout.
