It’s been one week since I was arrested for knocking on Governor Kemp’s door while he signed extreme voting restrictions into law. Make no mistake, I’m not the first to be arrested for fighting for my right to vote -- and I won’t be the last.
So if our opposition thinks they can scare me into silence, they’ve got another thing coming.
Our Georgia legislative rivals lost in November and January so instead of changing their messaging they’re changing the rules -- cowering behind false voter fraud allegations to institute voter restrictions the likes of which haven’t been seen since Jim Crow.
So, Georgia Democrats, like me, need your help. That’s why I’m writing to you today. We’re taking to the streets and to the courts and fighting back against this massive assault on our voting rights.
Will you join me and Turnout Democrats as we fight back on the ground by chipping in a split donation today?
Let me be clear: This law is a massive step backward in the fight for equal voting rights and was passed with one goal in mind: to keep Black and Brown voters from the polls.
This law restricts many methods of voting -- serving no purpose other than keeping voters from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
- It severely restricts early voting hours.
- It makes it illegal to provide food or drink to voters in line for the polls (even water).
- It requires mail-in voters to provide a driver’s license or additional identification on top of signature verification.
Our legislative opponents have already declared victory -- but we’ll make it short-lived. They can’t stop our grassroots momentum if every Democrat rallies behind us today.
John, we cannot live in fear. And our opposition can’t stop us from voting them out. We’ll continue to come together to fight white supremacy in all its forms -- every single one of us!
I hope you’ll join me in this fight today, John. It’s going to take all of us coming together now to overcome this major blow to our democracy and to protect the vote of my fellow Georgians. Can I count on you to chip in a split donation to hold our opponents' feet to the fire and turnout Democrats like never before?
Democracy is on the line. Will you step up?
Rep. Park Cannon Georgia State Representative GA-58
