Dear John,

Today we are exposing the UK zoo industry for making animals perform in circus-style shows for human entertainment.

Our investigator visited zoos where sea lions were being made to perform tricks and unnatural behaviours as part of daily shows. The shows were held in special purpose-built auditoriums, with tiered seating for crowds to watch the show. Just like what you would see at a circus.

In the shows sea lions were made to balance balls on their faces, 'clap' their flippers together like human hands and catch hoops around their necks. Some were made to jump up out of the water on command. Tricks you would expect to see in an animal circus.

Sea lion displays were once a typical example of the cruelty of animal circuses, but with the recent bans on wild animals in circuses coming into force, such shows have thankfully been consigned to history. However, despite wild animal performances being banned from circuses, shockingly they are still permitted if they take place within a zoo. But what's the difference?

Take Action!
  1. Contact your nearest zoo and ask them why they hold sea lions captive and make them perform.
  2. Spread the word on social media.
  3. Donate to to our appeal to stop these shows!

Today is the first day of our annual Zoo Awareness Weekend and I am calling on you to get involved! Please take action for sea lions and other animals exploited in zoos and let's end the exploitation of animals.

For the animals,

Sam Threadgill

P.S. Please take action today as part of Zoo Awareness Weekend, to end cruel sea lion shows in zoos. Thank you!
