John, your outpouring of support as we journeyed toward progress and equality has been overwhelming. We are so grateful for the hard work and sacrifices that you have exhibited along the way. None of what we’ve accomplished (and we’ve done a great deal) would have been possible without you!
Unfortunately, that progress is still at stake. In the time since the elections in November and January, Republicans across the country have been determined to set us back. Right now,
more than 250 bills have been filed that place restrictions on voting access, creating barriers to what should be a guarantee to all citizens. The latest suppression bill signed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp applies racist, voter ID laws to mail-in voting and increases opportunities for voter intimidation and purging.
As history has shown us, progress comes with backlash.
Current voter suppression efforts mirror those of the
1960s and
1970s, and just like those before us,
we have to fight back.
We cannot sit by and allow our work to be in vain. We must continue to push forward toward a more fair and equal democracy that respects the value of Black voices. We’ve come so far in this year alone. Now is not the time to quit! Together we have already been so powerful, but we have to keep going.
In solidarity,
-- Brandon Upson
