Friend,
Yesterday, Maura stood with her friends Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley to call on President Biden to cancel up to $50,000 in federal student loan debt.
Student loan debt is a $1.7 trillion crisis in the United States. The system is fundamentally broken – it enables for-profit schools to prey on vulnerable students and it saddles parents and students with loans they can’t possibly repay. As a result, millions of young people have been robbed of the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of starting a family, buying a home, owning a business, and more.
Experts agree that cancelling student loan debt would have the greatest impact for those who are struggling – particularly Black and Brown borrowers who have been hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic. This would offer direct, tangible relief for low- and middle-income borrowers. It would also fuel systemic change by remedying predatory practices, boosting our struggling economy, and helping to close the racial wealth gap.
President Biden has the power to make a change today – and that’s why Maura, Senator Warren and Congresswoman Pressley are urging him to act. We can and must do better. It’s long past time to address the student loan debt crisis and create a better future for millions of Americans.
Thank you,
Team Healey
