California policies are working, but they don't go far enough Friend, California’s fight for stricter air pollution policies has, according to a new report published by Science Magazine, reduced air pollution caused by diesel by an impressive 78%, over the last 30 years. Fighting for these policies is crucial because they have a significant health benefit to all Californians, including those in low-income communities of color, where air pollution has an oversized impact. Statewide, deaths related to diesel pollution dropped by 82%, according to the same study. The direct health impacts from stricter regulations are one of the key reasons CLCV has worked hard for nearly 50 years to pass bold policies and hold our legislators accountable. Support our continued efforts to pass innovative environmental and climate justice policy that will combat the climate crisis. Although these statistics are impressive, and show the impacts of strong policy, we recognize that they don’t go far enough. In the same period, diesel use actually rose, and reduction in key sectors, like agriculture, were almost non-existent. To see diesel-related air pollution and related deaths drop to the only acceptable number- zero- we must fight for policies that transition away from fossil fuels and support systemic infrastructure overhauls. That’s why we’re optimistic President Biden has included large investments in his infrastructure plan to transition from fossil fuel dependency. And we know, in California, we can go even farther. That’s where CLCV steps in. We have a proven track record of affecting policy change. And we need your financial support of $25 as we fight for our future on a very short timeline. Together, we can make a real difference for our future. In solidarity, Akira Brathwaite CLCV |
