Pharma lobby fights Dem proposals on vaccine access, drug pricing

Drugmakers are enjoying renewed clout in Washington for their rapid development of lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines, but they’re set to clash with Democrats over proposals that would hurt the pharmaceutical industry’s profits.
Democratic lawmakers are urging President Joe Biden to waive patent protections on vaccines to help other nations fight the virus. They’re also preparing legislation to allow Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs. Both measures are fiercely opposed by the pharmaceutical industry. And in the near future, drugmakers’ plans to hike the price of government-backed vaccines could be met with hostility by a Democrat-controlled Congress.

** Native political power paved the way for Haaland’s historic confirmation

Deb Haaland became the Secretary of the Interior after a confirmation vote of 51-40 in early March, picking up votes from every Democrat in attendance and Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.). Haaland, a former member of Congress for New Mexico and a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, is now the first Native American to helm the Department of the Interior, which encompasses the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is responsible for the conservation of federal lands across the country.

** Corporate PACs bankroll Liz Cheney as Trump backs primary
------------------------------------------------------------
As House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) prepares for an intense primary election, business PACs are giving her an early fundraising boost. Through the first two months of the year, Cheney is the No. 2 recipient of donations from PACs associated with corporations and trade associations, trailing only Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the top spot among all members of Congress. That’s according to Federal Election Commission filings released this month. There isn’t much business PAC money to come by following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, particularly for Republicans.

** Amazon clashes with Democratic lawmakers bankrolled by its own employees
------------------------------------------------------------
As Amazon warehouse employees in Alabama fight to unionize, the company is brawling with prominent Democratic lawmakers bankrolled by its own employees. Nearly 6,000 workers in Amazon’s Bessemer, Ala., warehouse voted Monday on whether to form the first labor union at an Amazon warehouse in the U.S., with counting starting on Tuesday. If a union is formed, it would be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. The push for unionization in Alabama comes after years of mounting worker complaints about dangerous and exploitative working conditions in Amazon warehouses.
