Thanks to years of work by organizers and activists, New York has taken two positive steps forward this week by legalizing recreational cannabis and passing the HALT Solitary Confinement Act. These pieces of legislation alone are not enough to repair the harms done by our carceral system, but they are important steps, and reminders that there is always work to be done.
It is not enough that New York is a blue city in a blue state. Organizers have known this for a long time and have never stopped fighting for real, equitable progress, rather than the flashy sort of progress that often comes out of Albany and City Hall and turns out to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors (like when the city pretended to defund NYPD by $1B over the summer).

It’s time to mobilize to elect a leader with integrity: one who doesn’t hide behind the language of progress to shield them from making decisions that actually improve the lives of everyday New Yorkers. Dianne is that leader. She’s not beholden to the establishment, corporations or wealthy Democratic donors; she doesn’t accept donations from powerful interests like luxury real estate developers or fossil fuel lobbies; and she’s committed to breaking down oppressive systems, regardless of how the establishment fights against us.
That’s why she was the first mayoral candidate to call for defunding the NYPD [[link removed]] , and why she has repeatedly stood by that call despite opposition from those who would rather maintain the status quo than invest in real public safety. Dianne has been vocal about the need to radically reimagine what New York City could look like if we were willing to suspend disbelief and upend the status quo — from housing to education, from policing to healthcare.
Our electeds have failed over and over again to put people over profit, and everyday New Yorkers always step up to the plate when the government fails them. And now, if we want real, impactful change in our communities instead of 4 more years of excuses, broken promises and bowing to wealthy elites, it’s time for us to show up for Dianne.
