Shooting of Protester in Hong Kong
China’s authoritarian president used the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule on Tuesday to pledge that nothing would stop his nation’s ascent. But the message was marred by some of the worst anti-government violence to convulse Hong Kong, including the first police shooting of a protester, as the NYT’s Chris Buckley, Mike Ives and Steven Lee Myers report.

U.S. and NK to Resume Talks
North Korea said it would resume working-level talks with the U.S. on Saturday, reviving a denuclearization process that has been stalled since a February summit in Vietnam ended without a deal, as the WSJ’s Andrew Jeong and Dasl Yoon report.

Protests in Iraq Turn Deadly
At least two people were killed and 200 wounded in clashes in Iraq on Tuesday as security forces used tear gas, water cannon and live fire to disperse demonstrations over unemployment, corruption and poor public services, as Reuters reports. |

This Town Tomorrow
At 12:30 p.m., the Stimson Center will hold a panel discussion on the power competition between the United States and China on the Korean Peninsula and its regional security implications.
And, at 1:00 p.m., the Atlantic Council will host a discussion with experts and Luis Guillermo Solís, the former president of Costa Rica, on how the international community should coordinate a global action plan in Venezuela to help alleviate the crisis there.

“Their motto is don't tread on me.”
Last week the Grateful Dead dipped into its considerable archive and released a live album, “Saint of Circumstance, Giants Stadium, 6/17/91.” For serious Deadheads they also released a limited edition box set available in hard copies or electronically of a series of live shows recorded at Giants Stadium from 1987, 1989 and 1991 plus video of the ’91 shows. This period was the Dead’s last renaissance and the material assembled in this collection (previously unreleased) is at times stunningly great.
The “Saint of Circumstance” album is available wherever you get your music via streaming or if you still buy CDs. It is one of only two Grateful Dead shows ever recorded to 48-track masters (the other one was recorded on 6/16/91) and a discerning ear can hear the difference. In terms of video, there are several great performances, but if this version of “Uncle John’s Band” doesn’t bring a smile to your face, I’ll be surprised. |
