Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

We would like to advise everybody that all Goethe-Institut Washington team members will be away from their workspaces on Friday, April 2, and Monday, April 5.

Have you been dreaming of the day we'll all be able to travel again? Even if it isn't here just yet, make sure that you'll be prepared for your trip to Germany when the day comes! Our language department has two exciting new offerings for the spring and summer: registration is currently open for all blended-learning adult German courses beginning on April 12, as well as a summer youth language program taking place in July.

Tune in tomorrow at 2:00pm EDT for the premiere of our next installment of Counter-Memories, featuring novelist Viet Tanh Nguygen and historian Drew Faust in conversation about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. If you're applying for the Public Interest Design Lab fellowship we're offering in collaboration with the DC Public Library, we have extended the deadline to April 5.

In a time of virtual programming, events that celebrate Earth Day 2021 effectively stretch it out to Earth Month – check out what our colleagues at the Goethe-Institut in Boston have planned for April!

Counter-Memories: Drew Faust & Viet Thanh Nguyen

Do war monuments not only commemorate but also victimize certain groups? Vietnamese-American novelist (The Sympathizer, The Committed) and Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen and historian and former President of Harvard University Drew Faust discuss this question in a conversation about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. for Counter-Memories, which investigates international monuments and places of remembrance within the context of historical memory in virtual conversations with artists, activists, and intellectuals.

EarthDay@Goethe

Our colleagues at the Goethe-Institut Boston join this year’s global Earth Day celebrations with a variety of online and in-person events. A tradition since 1970, thousands of organizations in over 193 countries around the world come together every year to honor our Earth and call for common climate action. In addition to online film screenings, author conversations and a student contest, we will celebrate Earth Day with song, art and coming together in and around our newly-renovated building on April 22nd.

Check out the full program line-up for virtual event offerings that can be accessed from the DC area!
