Launching the Life History Project

“Sometimes conservation feels like an ultramarathon.”

Meet Dr. Sam Snyder, Wild Salmon Center's Senior Campaign Manager for Alaska. His unique life history is the subject of the second story in our new Life History Project video series.

Sam arrived in Alaska after an early career researching and writing about unlikely allies in the conservation movement. In joining the Pebble Mine campaign, however, he quickly found himself on the frontlines of one of Alaska’s most contentious issues. To pace himself and stay sane on the campaign trail, Sam took up long distance running.

For 11 years—through three presidential administrations and the birth of two children—Sam has soldiered on in defense of Bristol Bay. It’s been a grueling grind at times, but also deeply inspiring—the journey of a salmon champion slowly earning his place in Alaska, through advocacy, self-awareness, and grit.

Watch Sam's story "An Alaskan Fight," filmed in South Central Alaska, traditional Dena'ina territory.
