10 Things to Know About the Third Round of Stimulus Payments
President Biden recently signed the American Rescue Plan into law, which will provide essential financial relief to individuals and families along with COVID-19 relief to states and localities. Importantly, the third round of stimulus payments expanded eligibility to adult dependents and some mixed-status immigrant families.

What We Can Learn from a Universal Basic Income for the Expanded Child Tax Credit
A basic income pilot in Stockton, California, provided $500 monthly payments to 125 residents with no strings attached. From improved family wellbeing and financial stability to an increase in full-time employment, these positive impacts hold hope for the refundable Child Tax Credit (CTC), which has been temporarily expanded by the American Rescue Plan.

Cutting Medicaid and SNAP Red Tape During the Pandemic
Policymakers' quick action in the early days of the pandemic cut enough red tape to ensure stable and increased coverage among Medicaid recipients. But a lag in SNAP enrollment in some states, despite flexibilities like emergency allotments (EAs) and other optional waivers, reminds us that we must find ways to fully eliminate bureaucratic burden.

IWS Update
At the beginning of March, the Biden-Harris Administration decided to stop defending lawsuits against the Trump-era public charge regulations aimed at restricting immigrants’ access to programs that support their basic needs. In response, courts across the country allowed previous rulings against the regulations to take effect, reverting to the 1999 guidance. People can now access health care, housing, and nutrition programs without worrying about the effect on their immigration status. We celebrate this victory with the attorneys, plaintiffs, advocates, community members, and all our partners who have contributed to the Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) campaign, while also recognizing that there is still work ahead.
The uptick in violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community that has gone unrecognized for far too long by mainstream media and nonprofit organizations alike prompted us to look inward. The IWS team has taken time this month to consider our role in dismantling anti-AAPI racism and its intersection with anti-immigrant policies.
This year of collective, sustained advocacy has also resulted in a relief bill that responds to the scale of the crisis: the American Rescue Plan (ARP). Though policymakers must do more to overcome historic racial inequities and poverty, this package marks a fundamental shift in public policy—centering children, people with low incomes, and racial justice in key elements of the legislation. We will continue to advocate for permanent expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) in the upcoming job's plan.
