It’s President Jimmy Carter’s 95th Birthday! Americans are so grateful for his service to our country -- both during his time as president and his dedication to extensive humanitarian work since leaving office.

And here in Iowa, Jimmy Carter has a special place in our history. Not many folks know it, but Jimmy Carter’s performance in the 1976 Iowa caucuses helped catapult the Hawkeye State into being one of the most important nominating contests in the presidential nominating process.

The Carter campaign was the first to take Iowa seriously. They understood the power of person-to-person organizing. Jimmy Carter himself knocked on countless doors, wrote personal handwritten notes to caucus-goers, and even slept on the couches of party activists.

And by taking Iowa seriously, Carter was immediately recognized as a serious contender for the Democratic nomination -- which of course carried him all the way to the presidency.

In many ways, we have Jimmy Carter to thank for making the Iowa caucuses what they are today. The Iowa caucuses make nominees -- and they make presidents.
