All Coloradans 16 And Older Will Be Eligible For A COVID-19 Vaccine Beginning April 2
CPR News
Gov. Jared Polis said Monday the state will make vaccines available to everyone 16 and older by Friday, April 2, about two weeks sooner than expected.
“Everybody 16 and up will be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine, everybody 18 and up for the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Those are the ages that they're approved for by the FDA,” said Polis. “There are currently trials underway for 12 to 15. We're hopeful that that can occur before school gets back in the fall.
...
The governor said he wanted to continue to prioritize older Coloradans and those working in frontline positions dealing with the public, like restaurant workers, even as he expands eligibility significantly. Polis said the state would be “aggressively partnering” with restaurants “to make sure that we have the quantities needed for our frontline workers that will be done during this period.”

Op-Ed: Transgender Visibility Needs to Go Beyond Media Favorites
Rep. Brianna Titone in Westword
In 2021, transgender people live a life subject to debate over our existence. International Transgender Day of Visibility demands not rights, not equity, not parity, but simple acknowledgment of our contributions to society. Celebrated each year on March 31, TDoV affords trans people the unique opportunity to demand to be seen. We’re one of the few communities in the United States who still have to fight to be acknowledged, fight for the affirmation of our roles in every community.

Colorado County Spotlight!
By Shelia Canfield-Jones, CDP Vice Chair of Rural Outreach

Sedgwick
Way up in the Northeast corner of Colorado you will find Sedgwick County. Julesburg is the county seat and the largest town. Sedgwick covers about 549 square miles. To the north and east of Sedgwick county you will find the state of Nebraska, to the west Logan County, to the south Phillips County. Established in 1889, the county was named for Fort Sedgwick, a military post along the Platte Trail, which was named for General John Sedgwick, a Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
The history of Native Americans in the area is similar to the surrounding areas of Eastern Colorado. From AD 1000 to 1400s the Upper Republican and Itskari occupied the area. Because of drought they soon abandoned the area. During the late eighteenth century and early nineth century the Kiowa, Cheyenne and Arapaho occupied the area. In 1840’s more white settlers moved into the area with the organization of the Oregon Territory and the 1849 California Gold Rush. The Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed by the Cheyenne, Lakota, Arapaho, and other Native American tribes which acknowledged Native American sovereignty across the plains, and each group would receive annual payments in exchange for guaranteeing safe passage for whites and allowing the government to build forts in their territory. In 1856 US Army Lt. Francis Bryan found an American Indian trail on the south side of the South Platte with a crossing near present-day Julesburg. The army began using the route, and in the aftermath of the Colorado Gold Rush it became part of the Overland Trail.
A weigh station was established in Julesburg in 1859. A French-Canadian trader named Jules Beni set up a saloon and restaurant to serve travelers, and the stop soon became one of the best-known establishments between Missouri and Colorado. This also made it a haven for outlaws, who came to prey on travelers. Beni expanded his establishment to include a warehouse, blacksmith shop, and stable, and eventually became the local stationmaster for the Leavenworth City & Pikes Peak Express stage line. Jules Beni turned out to be a dishonest stationmaster and the new Central Overland California & Pike’s Peak Express. The company sent Jack Slade to remove Jules Beni. He gave up his job as the stationmaster but continue to plot to steal money and horses from the company. For a year their rivalry continued. Eventually a posse found Jules Beni and shot him in a altercation. Slade cut off both of Jules Beni ears. Later Jack Slade became as corrupt being involved in violent drunken crimes. He was later hung in Virginia City, Montana, in 1864. The town of Julesburg has a rich history including being burned to the ground and rebuilt several times.
Today agriculture remains the backbone of Sedgwick County. The county ranks eighth among Colorado counties in corn production and thirteenth in wheat production, and also produces a significant amount of sunflower-seeds. Julesburg’s rich history, on display at the Fort Sedgwick Museum, offers insight into the history of these routes, as well as into nineteenth-century conflict and town life on Colorado’s eastern plains. Julesburg also features a Depot Museum highlighting the Union Pacific’s history in the town.
There are approximately 275 registered Democrats, 1003 Republicans and 610 Unaffiliated in Sedgwick County. The 2020 election saw 89.21% of the voters had their ballots counted. Being a shade of red, Sedgwick Democrats have their work cut out for them. Nicohle Skokan holds down the fort as the chair of the Sedgwick County Democratic Party.
