Less than one month after American women were finally granted the right to vote in 1920, four pioneering San Antonio women took steps to form the first Republican women’s club in Texas! Before the end of the first year, the response to the club was overwhelming, as more than 600 women answered the call to become more politically involved. Even during the decades when the state leadership of Texas remained staunchly Democrat, the club persevered and ensured the survival of the Republican Party in the state. Today, that club is known as the Bexar County Republican Women (BCRW), and is the third-oldest organization of its kind in the nation. Its long history of dedicated service to Republican Party principles, its outstanding leaders, and its unwavering volunteer commitment over the last century of Texas politics has ensured BCRW will be a force to reckon with for years to come. Over the next week, we will be focusing on some of the amazing BCRW leaders of today—sharing their inspiring stories to encourage the next generation of Texas women as they work to advance the timeless values of the Republican Party! With a family legacy in both the farming and banking businesses, she epitomizes the pioneering spirit of our Texas Republican fore-mothers. Van De Walle’s roots in the Republican Party run deep, as well, as she has been involved in politics in Bexar County for decades. An excellent organizer, fundraiser, and fearless leader of countless grassroots projects, she is a frequent “go-to” person for Party efforts. Within the county party, she has served as precinct chair, election judge, ballot board member, CEC secretary, and vice chairman. Van De Walle has been a consistent delegate to RPT conventions and was elected by her fellow precinct chairs as chairman of her senate district conventions three times. She has demonstrated tireless leadership in her seven terms as President of Bexar County Republican Women. She has worn many hats within the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW)—serving as Secretary, VP for Finance, and First Vice President. Her dedication has been recognized in Van De Walle’s selection as a recipient of TFRW's 10 Outstanding Woman award in 2001, and a 2013 Honoree of the Bexar County Republican Party Hall of Fame. #HERSTORYoftheRepublicanParty #WomensHistoryMonth Shirley Martinez’s dedication and experience reaches across the national, state, and local level. A graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word, Martinez began her federal career with the U.S. Air Force as a clerk-typist at Lackland AFB. She spent 29 years in civil service... a number of them in our nation’s capital, working in various agencies such as the Department of the Interior, the Office of Civil Rights, the Environmental Protection Agency, and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, Manpower & Reserve Affairs under the George W. Bush administration. Little did she know after her swearing-in ceremony at the Pentagon on September 10, 2001, she would forever remember her first full day on the job: 9-11. Known for her experience in developing policy and her ability to work to bring positive change, Martinez was a valuable liaison to the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence, as well as a member of the U.S. Senate Task Force on Hispanic Affairs. Upon retirement, Martinez returned to San Antonio and became active in the political process. She has served in leadership roles with Bexar County Republican Women (BCRW) and in the Bexar County Party as a precinct chair, convention delegate, and vice chair of the Republican Party of Bexar County. She is a 2013 Republican Party of Bexar County Hall of Fame Honoree, and a 2015 TFRW Ten Outstanding Award recipient. She has been recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the “Top 100 Latinas” in the United States. #HERSTORYoftheRepublicanParty #WomensHistoryMonth Freida Wright is an “adopted” Texan—born in the U.K., but settling in the Lone Star State with her husband and two children in 1971. From the moment of her arrival she became politically active, seeking to promote the values of the Republican Party and work to preserve the liberties she had come to cherish since moving to the United States. In 1997, she was finally awarded her citizenship. She would spend the next 22 years serving as a precinct chair, as well as in many other party roles, including election judge, candidate recruitment committee member, County Ballot Board member, and much more. Also in 1997, she joined the Alamo City Republican Women (ACRW). Quickly recognized for her fundraising and publicity skills, Wright was nominated for club president in 2000 and has served in that role ever since! Her vision was to continue to grow the club, and through her leadership, ACRW has consistently stayed as one of the largest clubs in Texas ever since. Wright has the incredible distinction of meeting and volunteering for every major national politician who has passed through Texas on the campaign trail. She especially enjoyed greeting President George W. Bush when he arrived in San Antonio. Her son was in Iraq at the time and the last thing President Bush said to her was “You be sure to tell Curby I love him, and I am proud to be his Commander in Chief.” In 2015, Wright was appointed to serve on the distinguished San Antonio Tricentennial Commission representing District 9, serving in that role until December of 2018. Though Wright has been honored as one of TFRW’s Top Ten in 2017, her proudest political accomplishment remains being president of ACRW and helping to keep it the club to be the largest in South Texas (and always in the top 3 in the state.) She loves being President, interacting with club members, and welcoming newcomers into the political fold! #HERSTORYoftheRepublicanParty #WomensHistoryMonth Alamo City Republican Women is the largest conservative group in south Texas and is made up of San Antonians of all ages and backgrounds… all committed to the future of this great nation. Organized in the 1950’s as the Northside Republicans, the name was changed to the Early Bird Republican Women’s Club in 1968. The club finally became Alamo City Republican Women (ACRW) in the 1970’s. For the past 20 years they have consistently been one of the top three clubs in Texas. ACRW believes that their strength comes from diversity of opinion, experience and culture. Their legacy is developing political leaders for the future, knowing that women are the most powerful force for change in the 21st century. ACRW donates thousands of volunteer hours to national, state and local candidates each election cycle, along with thousands of dollars in financial support. Club meetings are both political and educational, and the club prides itself on its charitable program focus. The current programs promoted by ACRW are: the Pearls Girls Court, the Boy’s Court, the SA Pregnancy Care Center, as well as other smaller area groups. Alamo City Republican Women believes in the power of grassroots political activism and lives that ideal every day.
