Did you know that science sometimes take a long time to see results from? Like three years long. Our Science Programs Director, Carolynn Box has been diligently working on a groundbreaking #microplastics study in the SF Bay in collaboration with the San Francisco Estuary Institute, the results of which are coming out TOMORROW! Carolynn speaks about her experience below.
"I’ve been blown away by the interest and excitement from partners and stakeholders to learn the results of the project because I think everyone understands the power of local data – we can use this to support local policies to reduce microplastics in our communities and hopefully influence statewide change which has huge potential in California.

For me, it was also extra exciting to carry out microplastics research in my local watershed – in many ways, this was like a San Francisco Bay Expedition. Our goal was to get out on the Bay to collect the data and now we are ready to make some noise with the results and data supported policy recommendations."

5 Gyres is thrilled to be collaborating with Surfrider, Greenpeace, and Heal the Bay on an upcoming Critical Race Dialogue for activists, lead by Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion experts Dr. Maya Bugg and La Mikia Castillo. This is the first in what we hope will be ongoing work to delve deeper into the ways that institutional racism show up in our collective efforts to drive change. We'd love to hear from you at [email protected] if this is a topic that you'd be interested in exploring further.
