Expand Immigration Equality’s reach to more trans asylum seekers

Dear Friend,

Today, I live without fear because I have asylum. I’m preparing to go to school to build on my past experience as a web developer. I’m transitioning and have been for many years. But it was a long road to get here.
As long as I can remember, I was singled out and bullied by my classmates. I’m fairly certain they didn’t know what transgender was, but they did figure out that I’m not like them. I spent an entire year of middle school in Syria indoors because I was scared.
On top of all of that, once I was back in the U.S., my immigration status was tenuous. I had no security that I wouldn’t be deported back to Syria—where things are exponentially worse for trans people.
No one should have to live in fear because of their immigration status or gender identity. By helping me win asylum, Immigration Equality was life changing for me, and I encourage you to help them change even more lives.

When I was a young child, in my dreams I was always a girl. Later in life, I developed an obsession with gaming. There, I could build an avatar that represented who I really was. I wanted that world to be real.
Reality was too hard.
When the Muslim ban hit, I considered trying to disappear. I wanted to run away or cross the border to Canada. Being deported to Syria was a very real fear.
During that time, my therapist recommended I reach out to Immigration Equality. It was a long road to get asylum, but one day my approval letter finally arrived. I thought I was dreaming. I didn’t think it was real.
My lawyer, Jeremy Saks, fought for me through the entire process. Without Immigration Equality, I would still be afraid. Consider making a $50 contribution today to promote safety for trans people.

I hope my story encourages other trans immigrants who feel stuck in their lives right now. You are not alone. Immigration Equality is ready to help in any way they can.
Sincerely,
