These are the stakes and this is not an exaggeration: BUT! Stacey Abrams is promoting a solution that can win over centrist Democrats!: Make voting and civil rights bills exempt from the filibuster without eliminating it entirely. Do you agree with Stacey’s proposal to EXEMPT voting and civil rights bills from the Senate filibuster?
Give us just thirty more seconds of your time to explain why this isn’t a radical idea:
- FIRST: This has been done several times before! Barack Obama called on Harry Reid to exempt Cabinet nominations from the filibuster in 2013 because of McConnell’s obstruction
- CONSIDER THIS: Mitch McConnell exempted Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominees from the filibuster in 2017, 2018 and 2020 (THREE times!)
- AND: Not only has it been used frequently, but it’s MUCH more likely to win over conservative Democrats who oppose outright abolishing the filibuster
Republicans have promised to filibuster The For The People Act to death. Plus, a handful of conservative Senate Democrats are blocking the abolition of the filibuster and they are not budging. So what do you think: Do you agree with Stacey’s idea that Democrats exempt voting and civil rights bills from the filibuster as a way forward?
This is a pivotal moment for our country so we look forward to hearing from you on this, 314 Action Fund
