As March comes to an end, I am reflecting on the strength and accomplishments of women across our state and nation with the celebration of Women’s History Month.

It is humbling to reflect on the incredible progress we’ve made. The Michigan House and Senate Democratic Caucuses have achieved gender parity, having an equal number of men and women, the entire executive branch of our state government is led by women, and Kamala Harris is the first woman Vice President.

As one of only 3 women to ever lead the Michigan House Democratic Caucus, I feel both honored by the office and frustrated by the small number of women I’m joining in the title. Progress has been made, but there is still much work to be done.

As the Democratic Caucus Leader, each day in Lansing, I fight to protect the rights and liberties of all Michiganders. Central in that fight is that value that women of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities should have a seat at the table and be empowered to lead.

There is certainly still room for more women in leadership roles in workplaces across our state. Over the past 25 years, national trends show a 50% growth in women in state legislatures and I look forward to supporting the next generation of engaging and effective female leaders.
