Campus Events Engage Students in the Role and Meaning of the U.S. Constitution

For Constitution Day 2019, JMC campus partner programs around the country hosted lectures, debates and other events in celebration of the day our nation's Constitution was ratified on September 17, 1787.

Programs touched upon a range of topics related to the Constitution and our country's founding, including freedom of speech, democracy, religious liberty, and the Constitution's impact on American leaders such as Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Highlights from JMC's Constitution Day Initiative:
James Madison: The Founder of Modern Founding
On September 16, Baylor University ([link removed]) hosted JMC board member James Ceaser ([link removed]) for a lecture on James Madison and the concept of founding.
Frederick Douglass's Constitutional Theory
On September 17, the University of Portland ([link removed]) hosted JMC faculty partner Nicholas Buccola ([link removed]) for a Constitution Day lecture on Frederick Douglass's view of the Constitution.
'The God of this Lower World': Burke, Lincoln and Constitutional Prudence
On September 18, JMC fellow Greg Weiner ([link removed]) spoke at American University's Political Theory Institute ([link removed]) on constitutional prudence and the political thought of Edmund Burke and Abraham Lincoln.
Did the American Founders Intend to Separate Church from State?
JMC faculty partner V. Phillip Muñoz ([link removed]) visited the Honors College at the University of Houston ([link removed]) on September 20 to deliver a Constitution Day lecture. Dr. Muñoz spoke on the founders' views of church-state relations ([link removed]) .
Is Civility a Sham? Speech and the Limits of Tolerance
Middlebury College ([link removed]) will host JMC fellow Teresa Bejan ([link removed]) on October 2. Dr. Bejan will lecture on the definition and bounds of toleration and civility in a liberal democracy ([link removed]) .

Our Democratic Constitution
On October 3, Rhodes College ([link removed]) will hold a Constitution Day lecture with Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer ([link removed]) . Justice Breyer's lecture will offer a view of the Constitution from the highest court in the United States ([link removed]) .

On the occasion of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, two of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar, the Jack Miller Center presents a collection of articles ([link removed]) from JMC fellows and other resources about the impact of Jewish-Americans and Judaism on political thought and the Founding. Early Jewish-Americans, such as Haym Salomon and Jonas Phillips, devoted themselves to the American cause and helped win the Revolutionary War. Judaism also has had a substantial impact on western, and subsequently American, political philosophy.
