Storytelling Spotlight with J.R. Chester

_Each month, the Texas Campaign interviews young adults or the adults who
serve them about their experience with sex education or teen pregnancy. The
impact of these stories helps inform our work across the state._

This month, we interviewed our Board Member, J.R. Chester. J.R. is a doula,
Community Health Worker, and former teen parent. In her interview, she
talks about the power of advocating for oneself and not letting anything
get in the way of achieving personal goals.

Chart of the Month

According to the 2019 natality data, 85% of teen births in Texas were paid
for by the state, through either Medicaid or the Children's Health
Insurance Program (CHIP). The proportion of deliveries covered by state
programs decreases to 60% for mothers aged 20-29, and then drops
drastically to 34% for mothers older than 30. Texas does not cover
contraceptives for teenagers through CHIP, and the resulting teen births
represent a significant cost that could be curbed with promoting
comprehensive sex education and making birth control accessible to
teenagers.
