“A senior Koch operative said that opponents would be better off ignoring the will of American voters"

Indivisibles,

Just four days ago, we sent you the message below about how Republicans are working with the Heritage Foundation to ram through dozens of state-level voter suppression bills, and that bills like S. 1 (the For the People Act) are crucial for stopping the tide.

And on Monday, the New Yorker broke even bigger news about the GOP’s wealthy backers: conservative organizations funded by the Koch brothers have admitted to Mitch McConnell’s advisers that the voting rights protections in the For the People Act are so popular across the political spectrum (including with conservatives) that they need to resort to “under-the-dome-type strategies” like the filibuster to kill the bill.

In fact, “a senior Koch operative said that opponents would be better off ignoring the will of American voters and trying to kill the bill in Congress.” This is the GOP playbook -- not serving and representing the people, but ignoring the people in a quest to enact an out-of-touch agenda.

We’ve got public opinion on our side, and we know how to use it: we’re spending $710,000 to build pressure on senators and members of Congress with call pages, newspaper ads, radio spots, events and more. And we need your help to make all that advocacy possible: donate $10 right now to fund the ads, resources, digital tools, and more that it’ll take to stop the Kochs, implement massively popular democracy reform, and make all our progressive priorities possible.

You can read Saturday’s email below for more about Republicans’ all-out attacks on voting rights. Or click here to read the New Yorker’s reporting on this latest development. Either way, we’re glad you’re with us to fight back against these attacks and build a better democracy -- and thank you for your support.

Subject: The Heritage Foundation and the GOP are coming for voting rights

Indivisibles,

The New York Times broke big news this week: the Heritage Foundation is working with Republican officials all over the country to build a coordinated attack on voting rights through dozens of voter suppression bills at the state level.

And they’re already planning to ramp up their efforts. Heritage Action’s executive director said, “So I would put Georgia, Arizona, Texas, Florida as kind of the first wave of seats. And then we’ll turn to looking at Wisconsin, Michigan and potentially Nevada.”

This is the kind of opposition we’re up against, and we know they’ll stop at nothing to rig elections so Republicans can keep power. We haven’t got any time to lose -- Georgia Republicans already passed the first of these laws, restricting voting locations and even making it a crime to bring food and water to people waiting in voting lines.

That’s why it’s so crucial that we go all in to fight for S. 1 (the For the People Act), H.R. 4 (the John Lewis Voting Rights Act), H.R. 51 (D.C. statehood), and eliminating the filibuster to make it all possible. The integrity of our democracy and the rights of the people are at stake.

We’ve got a $710,000 plan to win these key democracy reforms, and we’re up against powerful interests with millions to spend -- so every dollar counts. The power of our grassroots movement means we can do more with less, but we still need to fund everything from ads to event merch to digital organizing tools and more. So we’re asking for your support: click here to donate $10 to stop the Heritage Foundation’s plots, empower all the tools we’re using to implement real democracy reform, and advance all our progressive priorities.

Republicans are terrified to let people vote fairly because they know their policies are getting more and more unpopular. The only way they can win is to rig the game -- and they’re willing to do it. We were founded on the premise that people working together can defeat even the worst of anti-democratic interests, and Indivisibles like you have proven time and time again that we were right. Now let’s get to work and do it again.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
