Give more girls access to education. In many parts of the world, girls don’t attend school or are pulled out early due to poverty, discrimination, or early marriage. Working in countries like Nepal and Pakistan, we support girls by teaching their families about the value of education. For example, for every year of school completed, a girl’s income can increase by up to 25%. Plain and simple: education for girls is key to fighting poverty.

Prevent early marriages. Every year, roughly 14 million girls under the age of 18 are married – usually without their consent. In countries like Niger, where 60% of teenage girls are married, Mercy Corps offers information about the advantages of delaying marriage and childbirth. This helps keep young women and girls in the classroom longer, helping them unlock more opportunities to reach their potential.

Invest in more job opportunities for women. If women had the same access to jobs and income that men have, approximately $17 trillion could be added to the global economy. That’s why we offer job training programs in countries like Kenya, paving the way for more young women to gain marketable skills, build businesses and reach their goals.
