The American Rescue Plan was signed into law on March 11th. Most Americans started receiving their $1400 stimulus payments the following weekend―but for people on Social Security, many of them still haven’t received it!

The good news is that, yesterday, the White House announced that nearly everyone on Social Security will receive their stimulus payments by April 7th at the latest. Why the delay? Because Trump appointees at the Social Security Administration withheld payment information from the IRS for a month, in the hope that frustrated seniors would blame Biden for their wait.

That’s not the only reason that Social Security Works, members of Congress including Sen. Sherrod Brown and Rep. John Larson, unions representing SSA workers, and allies have called for Trump appointees Andrew Saul and David Black to be removed from the SSA―but it’s a particularly egregious one.

Saul and Black have spent their few years at SSA waging war on the dedicated workers who make sure that every payment goes out in full and on time. They backed Trump’s ideological attacks on earned benefits, from rules making it harder to keep benefits you’ve qualified for to Trump’s defunding scheme.

President Biden hasn’t been shy about cleaning house when he recognizes that the Trump holdovers are sabotaging the agencies they run―from firing members of the National Labor Relations Board on day 1 to dismissing 40 EPA science advisors who interfered with research on the climate crisis.
