Law Enforcement News Man Stabbed And Killed Someone Else Before Fatally Stabbing Himself In Beverly Grove: LAPD After two men were found dead in Beverly Grove, police said Tuesday that one of the individuals apparently stabbed and killed the other person before fatally stabbing himself. The pair was found dead Monday evening inside separate homes located within a block from each other, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers responded to the 6600 block of Maryland Drive for a reported burglary around 4:35 p.m. While at the scene, officers learned from neighbors about a man inside a home who had been stabbed, police said. Paramedics later pronounced him dead at the scene. Officers were searching the area afterward when they came across a man with a self-inflicted stab wound inside another home, according to LAPD. Investigators believe that man stabbed and killed the man who officers found earlier. In a news release, LAPD officials said the killing appears to be “an isolated incident” and there is no active search for a suspect. KTLA 5 MS-13 Gang Member Charged In Latest Attack On Transgender Woman In MacArthur Park A member of MS-13 was charged this week with assaulting a transgender woman Thursday in MacArthur Park, the latest in a string of attacks allegedly committed by the gang against members of the LGBTQ community in the area, prosecutors said. Gabriel Orellana, 19, was charged with one count of battery likely to produce great bodily injury in connection with the attack, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Ceballos. Orellana and another suspect — who has yet to be arrested or charged — are believed to have approached the victim, asked why she was there and yelled derogatory remarks before knocking her to the ground and striking her repeatedly in the head and torso, Ceballos said. The woman was treated at an area hospital and required stitches, Ceballos said. It was at least the fourth time a member of the gang had been linked to violence against a transgender woman in the park since August 2020. Last year, prosecutors filed three counts of attempted murder against MS-13 member Donoban Fonseca, who is accused of stabbing two transgender women in separate incidents between August and October. Los Angeles Times Body Camera Footage Released From Barricade, Deadly Shootout With SWAT Officers Near USC Body camera footage was released on Tuesday from an encounter with police officers, where a SWAT officer was injured, during a barricade situation near the University of Southern California two weeks ago. 36-year-old armed suspect Jorge Serda was shot and killed at the scene and one SWAT officer was shot at in his vest and then in his face. The incident happened in L.A. about a mile north of the USC campus on the afternoon of March 16. LAPD officers were called by Serda’s family about an armed man on drugs in the backyard of a home on the 1000 block of West 21st Street in Exposition Park. Investigators say when they arrived, the man, identified as Serda, barricaded himself inside the home. Police said he had a shotgun, but it was initially thought that he was armed with a BB gun. After hours of negotiations, officers said they attempted to use tear gas to get him out, but that’s when police say Serda began shooting, and that’s when officers returned fire. Serda was killed at the scene and officers say they recovered two firearms. The injured officer, a 17-year veteran, is expected to recover from his injuries. CBS 2 LAPD Searching For Missing 13-Year-Old Boy Authorities are searching for a missing 13-year-old boy who was last seen in Los Angeles. Curtis Johnson ran away from his home at about 11 p.m. on March 21 and was last seen in the 400 block of West 109th Place, according to an LAPD statement. Johnson is described as Black, 6-feet-tall, weighs about 190 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing dark green pants, a dark green T-shirt and black shoes. Johnson’s family is concerned for his safety and safe return home, authorities said. FOX 11 Man Arrested For Trespassing At Kendall Jenner's Los Angeles Home A man was arrested after he allegedly trespassed at Kendall Jenner's Los Angeles home during the weekend. The Los Angeles Police Department says Shaquan King, 27, was arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday after he was caught roaming the property in Sherman Oaks. King was later released on bail and is being charged with misdemeanor trespassing. The arrest comes as Jenner and her attorney filed a restraining order against another man Monday. ABC 7 Man Sought In Restaurant Robbery In Culver City Authorities Tuesday sought public help to find a man who robbed a restaurant in Culver City. The crime occurred about 2:10 p.m. Monday in the 3900 block of Sepulveda Boulevard, the Culver City Police Department reported. The suspect was described as Hispanic, about 20 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build. He wore a blue Los Angeles Dodgers hat, a black T-shirt and gray pants. “The victim stated that he was working behind the register when the suspect entered the business,” a police statement said. “The suspect approached the register, simulated a handgun under his shirt and demanded the money from the cash register. MyNewsLA.com Highlighted Social Media Post Three Sought In Hit-and-Run Death Of Woman Who Tried To Stop Thieves in Lancaster Homicide investigators are asking the public for help identifying three men suspected of killing a woman by running her over with their vehicle in Lancaster on March 26. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released pictures of the three men, between 20-30 years of age, who they say were involved in an attempted robbery at an apartment complex in the 44000 block of 15th Street West, near Avenue J-8. The attempted robbery left Samantha Mena dead after investigators say Mena, who was in her 30s, tried to stop the thieves. She followed them and "during the course of this incident, the suspects entered their vehicle and ran over the victim as they fled the scene," said the sheriff's department. Deputies and emergency crews responded to the scene just before 8:30 p.m. on March 26 and took Mena to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. NBC 4 CHP K-9 Sam Recovering After Being Stabbed During Arrest CHPl K-9 Sam was recovering — and showing a healthy appetite — on Tuesday, March 30, a day after being stabbed while helping authorities apprehend a man wanted in a kidnapping investigation. Sam, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, had surgery Monday at Inland Valley Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center in Upland, said Officer Ramon Duran, a spokesman for the CHP Inland Division. But Sam, a two-year veteran of the force, was back eating on Tuesday after waking up from being sedated, Duran said. The incident began just before noon Monday near the intersection of Caliente Road and Oak Hills Road in Hesperia when San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull over a car being driven by the wanted man, William Shae McKay, 52, of Rancho Cucamonga. But McKay sped off in a GMC Sierra, a sheriff’s news release said. The pursuit led deputies south on the 15 Freeway until McKay exited at Highway 138 in the Cajon Pass and headed north. Los Angeles Daily News California Cop Uses Narcan To Save Toddler Exposed To Fentanyl A Concord police officer is being lauded for his actions after saving a baby that had been exposed to fentanyl last week. Officer Aaron Khamosh's heroics on March 26 were recounted on the Concord Police Department's Facebook page Monday and had been "liked" by 1,700 people by 1 p.m. Another 175 people shared the post. The officer was not available immediately for comment. "We are grateful the baby will survive this ordeal and for Officer Khamosh's quick thinking," police said in a statement. According to police, Khamosh was on patrol when a driver frantically waved him down on Salvio Street at an undisclosed time Friday night. The officer got to the car and saw a 2-year-old in the back seat who wasn't breathing. Khamosh immediately began performing CPR that included chest compressions, police said, and the baby didn't respond. When the baby grew pale, police said the woman told Khamosh the toddler "got ahold of fentanyl." He administered two doses of Narcan, a drug that can offset an opioid overdose. The baby regained consciousness, and Khamosh continued the CPR until paramedics from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District arrived. An ambulance took the toddler to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland and is expected to recover. PoliceOne Murder Suspect Arrested In 42-Year-Old Colorado Cold Case Weld County has arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for one of the oldest cold case murders in the county. Evelyn Kay Day, 29, left work at Aims Community College on Nov. 6, 1979, around 10 p.m. The next day, two coworkers found her body in her car. Day had been beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled with a belt from her overcoat. "For more than 41 years, Kay's family and friends and the rest of Weld County community have been waiting for the killer to be brought to justice," said Weld County Sheriff, Steve Reams. "I am pleased to announce we took a significant step in that direction earlier this week." James Herman Dye, 64, was arrested in Wichita, Kan., and is awaiting extradition to Colorado where he will be prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Robert Miller, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wrenn and Deputy District Attorney Tim McCormack. District Attorney Michael J. Rourke said that his office filed two counts of murder in the first degree March 25. The counts are based on two "different theories of murder." The Denver Post Public Safety News Large Fire Tears Through Westlake District Home, Threatens Apartment Building Firefighters battled a large blaze which tore through a vacant two-story home in the Westlake District Wednesday morning and also caused minor damage to an apartment building. The blaze was reported at 5:25 a.m. in the 190 block of South Virgil Avenue. Aerial footage from Sky2 showed the house engulfed in flames. It took 93 firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. There were no injuries. Crews were expected to remain on scene to monitor for hot spots and overhaul debris. The blaze caused some minor heat damage to an adjacent four-story apartment building, the fire department said, but no one had to be evacuated and crews prevented the flames from actually spreading to the apartment building. There was no word on a cause. CBS 2 LA, Orange County Businesses Cleared For More Reopenings; Criteria Met To Move Into Orange Tier Los Angeles and Orange Counties have met the criteria to move into the less restrictive "orange tier" in California's Blueprint for a Safer Economy, allowing a loosening of business capacity limits and the reopening of bars for outdoor service. However, Los Angeles County health officials on Tuesday said they plan to maintain a few stricter restrictions than the state, with a revised health order expected to be released Friday. Qualifying for the orange tier requires a county to have an average daily rate of new COVID infections of 3.9 per 100,000 residents, along with a testing-positivity rate of 4.9% or less, and maintain those levels for two consecutive weeks. Tuesday's figures showed that Los Angeles County had a new case rate of 3.8 per 100,000 residents and a testing-positivity rate of 1.5%. In Orange County, the case rate per 100,000 was 2.8 and the positivity rate was at 1.7%. FOX 11 California To Add Nearly 1,400 Firefighters Amid Fears Of Another Devastating Wildfire Season California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday said the state will hire nearly 1,400 additional firefighters as an unusually dry winter stokes fears of another devastating wildfire season. California depends on snowfall in the mountains for much of its water. But the latest snow survey recorded a statewide “snow water equivalent” of just 15 inches, or about 54% of average for April 1, when the state’s snowpack is the deepest. The state had a similarly dry winter last year. What followed was a record-setting wildfire season where more than 4% of the state’s land burned, destroying nearly 10,500 buildings and killing 33 people. Tuesday, Newsom said he was using his emergency authority to spend $80.74 million to hire 1,399 additional firefighters at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, better known as Cal Fire. More than 19,000 firefighters battled blazes in California last year. “We aren’t just waiting for the next crisis to hit — this funding will support our heroic firefighters to save lives as they work to prevent and tackle destructive wildfires,” Newsom said in a news release.
