The Trump administration announced the biggest rollback of the Clean Water Act in decades.
John,
Donald Trump's EPA finalized the biggest rollback of Clean Water Act protections in decades.
With the stroke of a pen, protections were repealed for 18% of our rivers and streams and 51% of our wetlands.1,2
The drinking water sources for one in three Americans are now open for developers to destroy with unlimited toxic runoff pollution.3
But we won't stand by and let Trump destroy our rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands. Food & Water Action is fighting on all fronts at the state, local and national levels to protect our waters and maintain a strong Clean Water Act.
The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972 after the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught on fire in the midst of a nationwide clean water crisis.
The law works! Every year, more than 700 billion pounds of toxic pollution is kept out of our rivers and lakes thanks to the Clean Water Act. Waterbodies like Boston Harbor, the Hudson River and the Great Lakes have made remarkable improvements.4
But Trump's replacement of the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule with a weaker one will allow the destruction of wetlands that protect our vital drinking water resources and smooth the way for more pipelines through previously protected areas. Factory farms will be allowed to dump fertilizer, livestock manure and pesticides into waterways that feed into our most important drinking water sources.5,6
To fight back, we have a three-part plan to protect our waterways:
Food & Water Justice is exploring legal action to strike down the Trump administration’s reckless actions to undermine the Clean Water Act.
We're working with allies in Congress to push for new protections through the EPA funding process. Trump must sign legislation to fund the EPA each year, and clean water champions in Congress can force them to accept stronger clean water protections or else risk a government shutdown.
We're holding President Trump accountable in the media and with grassroots actions to make sure the public knows the damage being done.
Food & Water Action has been fighting for clean water for decades, and this is one of the biggest attacks we've ever faced.
Food & Water Action and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Watch, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
