Did you know that freelancers and authors have a union?
Yes, it’s true. For decades, a nationwide union chapter, UAW Local 1981, has existed under its alternate name of the National Writers Union or NWU. This union fights for free speech, net neutrality, fair contracts between freelance writers and publishers, and other issues of interest to writers of all kinds. They also provide contract negotiation or drafting assistance and an optional health plan. The Twin Cities has had a local branch of the chapter, but it has been semi-dormant in recent years.

An NWU member named Robbie Orr is seeking to revive the branch by holding a meetup on October 16th, at Gandhi Mahal restaurant community room, at 6:30 pm. He's invited DSA members and has sent us a brief statement with more detail. (Read more...)

What we're up to...
No Trump in Our City
Trump wants to win Minnesota, and he's coming to lead a rally of his bigoted supporters in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday, October 10, to prove he can. Let's show him that this state wants nothing to do with him or the Republican party.  (Read more...)

Keeping Up the Pressure on Contentration Camp Investors: A Tour of Corporate Shame and a Weekend of Action
Concentration camps are big business. Minneapolis has no shortage of corporations profiting off human suffering and misery, as immigrants are targeted at the border and throughout the country.  (Read more...)

Line 3 Update: One in the Win Column, and Upping Our Game Up North
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency conceded to public pressure last week and denied Enbridge a water quality permit it needs to build the new Line 3 pipeline. This is a significant victory for water protectors, but not the end of the line. Enbridge is not going to stop pre-construction on this project and intends to build come hell or high water. In mid-October Twin Cities DSA will be joining a march into the heart of the beast, delivering the message to Enbridge’s doorstep: This pipeline will not be built! (Read more...)

Twin Cities DSA Ecosocialist Branch got a huge cheer from the crowd at the Youth Climate Strike action at the State Capitol in Saint Paul when they did this epic banner-drop.
Brexit - could it really just be all about the taxes?
I’ll bet you’re confused as heck about Brexit. Don’t worry, so are most average Brits. It’s deliberately designed to be confusing, because, apparently, it’s all just a massive con game to the powerful interests who are really in charge. That’s what I have come to believe in the past month or so of obsessively reading everything I can get my hands on about Brexit. The narrative that finally began to resolve into a sensible explanation, even though on its face, it’s a paranoid fantasy, is that Brexit was designed from the very start to be chapter three in the staggering acceleration of the wealth gap between working class and (those who consider themselves) ruling class. New Working Group in TCDSA to address mental health
On Saturday, September 14, a group of five Twin Cities DSA members - Jordan and Arissa, Ezra I, Jessica N, and I (Debs) - met at a Saint Paul coffee shop to launch a new working group focusing on mental health. You may ask - is that mental health in policy and theory, mental health as a diversity point in socialist culture, or our own individual mental health as a factor in our lives and overall health? Is our group going to be working on destroying stigmas about mentally ill people, or on ensuring mental health coverage stays in Medicare4All, or are we going to be a mutual aid and support group for anyone struggling with a mental health issue? The answer is yes! All of those! (Read more...)

For Further Review

With so many great podcasts, articles, books and videos coming out, it's easy to miss something great. Here's a few things we've found and loved recently.

To decarbonize we must decomputerize: why we need a Luddite revolution
Any defense of Luddites is worth reading, if you ask me. This one proposes a Luddite approach to reducing the environmental impact of big data and, at the same time, fighting mass surveillance. - TMW

We Will Win Health Justice In America
Tim Faust (DSA member) in Splinter, with an excerpt from his new book Health Justice Now: Single Payer and What Comes Next. Faust will be in Minneapolis as part of his book tour on October 14, at Moon Palace Books. - DKR

Isra Hirsi is 16, Unbothered, and Saving the Planet
As the co-founder of the U.S. Youth Climate Strike and the daughter of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Isra Hirsi is grappling with harassment, safety threats, tokenization, and privilege on a national scale years before she's even allowed to vote. - DKR

Organizing the Class: Interview with Two Members of Target Workers Unite
Two unapologetically communist organizers with Target Workers Unite talk about their struggles with bosses, abusive managers, and labor non-profit opportunists. Their thoughts on strategy and tactics and their experiences with "organizing the whole worker" will be essential for building a fighting labor movement in the 21st century. - CMN

DSA National Convention: Fog & Storm
For the Unity of Marxists: A Response to Fog and Storm
For the Unity of Marxists, or the Unity of the Dispossessed?
Three essays by outside (?) observers, each a response to the next, contemplating and criticizing the recent DSA national convention, and arguing for what orientation the US socialist movement should take going forward. Their jabs are sometimes sharp, but I think these are some of the smartest socialist thinkers alive today, and we would do well to at least consider their diagnoses, even if we may reject some of their prescriptions. - CMN
[ed. note: some of these have been included in previous newsletters, but worth revisiting, especially in conversation with one another! - ARB]

Cash/Consent
Content note for mention of sexual assault. This is a very good first-hand account of a career in sex work. Alongside the narrative is a critique that reveals how far the public discourse has to go, even among feminists, in recognizing sex workers as workers and as humans. - TMW (with endorsements from RT & CMN)

The Day One Agenda
With the probability of at least a progressive candidate entering the white house, The American Prospect has stared rolling out research pieces outlining just how much a US president could use executive power for good in the world with the hopes that the information is hammered into whoever takes the seat. - LH
