John,
It has now been more than two months since Donald Trump’s dangerous and corrupt presidency ended. It has been an enormous relief to turn the page to a more ethical government, but I feel strongly that we can’t yet turn away from reckoning with Trump’s abuses. In some ways, accountability is just beginning.
We hope you will continue to support us as we push for consequences for Trump and his enablers in the coming weeks and months.>>
As president, Trump was shielded from prosecution for any number of potential criminal charges, from obstruction of justice to campaign finance crimes to bank and insurance fraud to seditious conspiracy. That protection has now expired, and his conduct could (and should) now bear real consequences.
A president leaving office with a list of serious criminal liabilities is not normal, and it must not be normalized. Donate to CREW today to stand for a better government, where criminality and corruption are met with consequences. >>
For Trump’s inner circle, the end of his presidency also comes with legal liability. People like Steve Bannon, Erik Prince, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Roger Stone and Rudy Giuliani all have potential criminal exposure. The Department of Justice under Attorney General Merrick Garland should review all uncharged potential crimes committed by Trump and his allies to ensure that there was no undue political influence in the decisions not to charge them. We sent a letter saying as much, along with good government allies, to AG Garland.
If the Biden administration is truly going to turn the page on the corruption of the Trump era, there must be accountability for Trump allies’ ethical violations as well. CREW has outstanding criminal conflict of interest complaints against Ivanka Trump, Marc Short and Wilbur Ross. There are also more than 50 Hatch Act complaints awaiting action, including against William Barr, Chad Wolf and Mark Meadows, as well as potentially criminal violations by Rudy Giuliani and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
If they are allowed to escape consequences for monetizing the presidency and leveraging government resources for personal and political gain, the Trump era will have truly left our democracy in a weakened, corrupted state. We cannot and will not allow that to happen.
Join us today in fighting for a better government and accountability for Trump’s abuses!
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
