My daughter Evie came out to our family as transgender when she was just 14 years old. From that day on, I knew that she would be living in a nation where she could be discriminated against just because of who she is.

But that day was also the happiest day of my life -- because my daughter had found her authentic self.

That’s all our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters are asking for. To not have to wake up every day pretending to be someone they aren’t for fear of being kicked out of their home, fired from their job, or verbally and physically assaulted out on the street.

So today, as we celebrate Trans Visibility Day, I say to every American fighting for the freedom to simply be who they are and who they want to be: I see you.

And I will never stop working for a world where you have the dignity, acceptance, and protections you deserve. That means continuing to challenge the disgusting rhetoric and legislative bullying of lawmakers like Marjorie Taylor Greene who would deny every principle our country stands for just to try and justify their hatred.

That means continuing my work in Congress to enact legislation that will guarantee every American’s rights, including the Equal Rights Act and my amendment to the Violence Against Women Act to protect LGBTQ+ survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Progress is possible. And together, we’re going to make it happen.
