Friends—
VICTORY! WE DID IT. YOU DID IT.
Today we celebrate a historic victory—President Biden announced his American Jobs Plan, and included that he is calling on Congress to specifically target funding to workers facing some of the greatest challenges, which includes $5 billion over eight years in support of evidence-based community violence prevention programs. We are thrilled with this news after years of working to support funding directives that will directly help address gun violence in communities of color.
This step from the Biden-Harris Administration comes less than a month [[link removed]] after we joined our partners, including Life Camp Inc., Not Another Child, LIVE FREE, Cities United, READI Chicago,The HAVI and others to launch the Fund Peace campaign urging federal officials to invest $5.3 billion to resource community-driven solutions to address violence in cities most impacted by the public health crisis of gun violence.
We called on President Biden to ensure current funding streams, such as the Victims of Crime Act, prioritize programs and efforts addressing community gun violence, [[link removed]] and that programs such as Medicaid financially reimburse frontline violence intervention workers who promote healing for those who have been impacted by gun violence.
Today’s historic moment is the result of years of work, commitment, and advocacy to center the people closest to the pain. To everyone who signed our petitions, made phone calls, joined our campaigns, or supported our work: THANK YOU.
Across the country, local leaders have implemented community-focused, evidence-based strategies including violence intervention outreach, hospital-based intervention programs, and therapeutic programs that support those most traumatized by gun violence. When adequately funded and supported, these strategies have produced significant reductions in gun violence in the most vulnerable communities.
We are proud to say that not only were our asks fulfilled, but we are confident that we have committed allies in the Biden-Harris Administration. Now Congress must act.
We thank President Biden, Vice-President Harris, Ambassador Rice, as well as the entire Biden-Harris Administration for their partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to imagine a world without gun violence that centers the people closest to the pain.
In solidarity,
Gregory Jackson Jr.
