Friend,

We just made history! Today, the New York State Legislature overwhelmingly approved a bill to legalize marijuana that centers equity and social justice, and Governor Cuomo is expected to sign it into law shortly: [link removed]

Thank you for making this incredible victory possible! DPA has been working in New York for almost two decades and this win comes after years of persistent advocacy along with our allies and supporters like you.

Through the hard work of people impacted by prohibition, advocates and champion lawmakers, like Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Senator Liz Krueger, New York has taken bold action to chip away the remnants of the war on drugs.

We’re ushering in a new era of marijuana justice. The passage of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) will legalize marijuana for adult use, comprehensively address the harms of overcriminalization, and establish one of the most ambitious marijuana legalization programs in the nation.

Through this sweeping legislation, New York is delivering reforms that place community reinvestment, social equity, and justice at the core of the law.

Marijuana prohibition has ruined lives and disproportionately devastated Black and Brown people. That’s why we’ve been fighting to ensure legalization is done right and reinvests back into these communities that have been most harmed by the war on drugs.

We went from New York City being the marijuana arrest capital of the country to today New York State showing the rest of the country what comprehensive marijuana reform looks like.

This incredible victory is yet another step you’ve helped us take to center racial and social justice in marijuana legalization, undo the damage of prohibition, and chip away at the drug war.

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also in the midst of a similar campaign to legalize cannabis in New Mexico as soon as this week and we’re working with members of Congress to advance reform at the federal level.

Friend, we need your help to build on our momentum. This victory in New York makes it clear that more and more Americans like you are demanding reform. But there is still so much more to do and we need your support.
